Apps can be fun and apps can be useful. However, how do you know which apps are gems and which apps are flops? There are so many apps to choose from and many people struggle with an app overload that is becoming prevalent in society today. Just recently, a piece was published in the New York Times that states that the Apple app store has announced that there are 775,000 applications waiting for the iphone and ipad on virtual shelves. That’s a lot of apps!
In addition, a report titled State of the Appnation – A year of Change and Growth in U.S. smartphones, talks about how the number of app downloads are increasing. It states that the average number of apps per phone has increased 28% (32 apps to 41 apps per device) between 2011 and 2012. I myself have 166 apps on my phone and many others struggle with a similar overload of apps as stated in the New York Times article.
Having too many apps on your phone though, could lead to some problems. An article from USA Today talks about how the app overload in one father replaced his T.V. watching, time with his family, and even sleep. In addition, an app overload may cause damage to you device. Forbes writes an article entitled, “Apple iOS6: You can have too many apps” that the new apple iOS6 update sets a limit on the number of apps you may have on your device. If you reach 500, your device will begin slowing down, and if you reach 1000 apps, your device won’t boot up at all.
But, don’t fear. This article will take a look at some of the hottest free apps in the Apple app store this week. With this review, you’ll be able to zero in on the apps that are most useful for you and allow you to avoid the app overload.
1. The number 1 top free app in the Apple app store is called “4 pics 1 word.” It is a game where 4 pictures flash up on the screen with 12 letters below these pictures. Your job is to think of a similar word that ties all four pictures together and then type this word using the twelve letters provided. In my opinion, this game is rather boring. For me, either the similar word is ridiculously obvious or it’s extremely hard. There is no option to skip a puzzle if you can’t find the similar word. In addition, while you’re playing the game, there are two helps flashing at the bottom of the screen, but in order to use a help you must purchase coins using real money, or win them by playing the game an excessive amount. This app is not worth your time.
2. The number 3 top free app is called “CocoPPa.” This app allows you to create a new design for popular apps that you use such as safari or facebook. Once you choose a new design, this new design shortcut will appear on your home screen along with the old app. The app also allows you to experiment with wallpaper and stamps. In addition, you can “follow” other users or create your own designs yourself to personalize apps. When you get this app, you must sign in with your facebook or twitter account or make your own account. Even so, this app is pretty cool if you like art, or are an artsy person. I wouldn’t rush out to download it, but if you even have extra time and want to personalize your phone, this is a cool app to get.
4. The number 4 top free app is called “Candy Crush Saga.” This addicting game is fun to play and makes the time pass really quickly. Candies are lined up in rows and your goal is to try and swipe so that 3 or more candies of the same color are lined up, and then they will disappear. You travel through candy town as you complete the levels. In you like app games, this one is great! It is a must-have gaming app and you just might get addicted.
5. The number 5 top free app is an app called “YouTube.” This app replaces the previous YouTube app that used to be permanent on apple devices. This app is useful for frequent YouTube users. I would highly recommend this app if you’re missing the old YouTube app that was removed during the iOS6 update. The only complaint I have is that when you close the app, the music will not keep playing, but the old app did not have this feature either. Overall, this is a great app and a must-have.
